Guest Opinion. Cherokee Nation is trusted with dollars to provide services for our citizens, and we take that responsibility extremely seriously. Essential services like housing, health care, elder support and economic development depend on it. Whether our funding comes from tax revenue, federal grants and set-asides, or business profits, we track each dollar carefully to do the most good for Cherokees. The best financial decisions are made with transparency and accountability.

Guest Opinion. Since January, I’ve spent Tuesdays and Thursdays teaching in Berkey Hall, one of the buildings on Michigan State University’s campus where a gunman last Monday evening entered the university and killed three students and critically injured five others. Two students died in a Berkey Hall classroom.

Guest Opinion. Conflicts between Cherokee Nation and state officials tend to make the most news, especially during election years. However, the larger reality is that our tribe has a constructive relationship with a large majority of state and local leaders in Oklahoma. We know that a strong Cherokee Nation and a strong Oklahoma go hand in hand.

Guest Opinion. We all depend on farmers, ranchers and those who support them to bring food and other essential agricultural products to our tables and homes. At the Cherokee Nation, we are especially mindful that without food sovereignty, all other aspects of our sovereignty will be at risk. That is why we focus on strengthening the agriculture industry on our reservation and giving Cherokees plenty of opportunities to thrive as food producers.

Guest Opinion. The American Dental Association defines “Health Equity” as optimal oral health for all people.  We recognize that oral health is an essential part of overall health, and that every individual should enjoy a basic level of oral health that allows them to live, work and play free from pain and dysfunction.

Opinion. Having a Native American in an elective office representing Indian Country issues is beneficial. Representation matters. Such is the case in California, a state with 109 federally recognized tribes. One elected Native, Assemblyman James C. Ramos, is making a difference.

Guest Opinion. For over two decades, the opioid epidemic has plagued the Cherokee Nation Reservation. It has affected every facet of our tribe and society. Hundreds of Cherokee Nation citizens have died from overdoses. Tens of thousands more have suffered. It caused generational trauma and put the future of our nation at risk. Nearly a third of the opioids distributed in the state in recent years were shipped into Cherokee Nation, because irresponsible drug makers and distributors preyed on the rural communities across our reservation.

Opinion. It is common to pull into a parking lot of a restaurant or a hotel located on an Indian reservation and have a stray dog hanging around for some attention and maybe some food. These dogs are commonly referred to as reservation dogs.

Guest Opinion. For more than 160 years, the Boys & Girls Clubs organization has offered mentorship and support for youth. They have grown to serve local communities across the country, and they have long brought a special focus to youth living on Native lands. Today, Boys & Girls Clubs play a special role across the Cherokee Nation Reservation.
