Guest Opinion.  Cherokee Nation has the power and the responsibility to protect all Cherokees and ensure justice is served on our reservation. That’s why Deputy Chief Bryan Warner and I recently proposed the Cherokee Family Protection and Violence Against Women Act. This new law builds on the legal authority allowed for tribes under the federal Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). It will strengthen the ability of our Cherokee Nation Marshal Service, Attorney General’s office and victim services programs to protect victims and survivors of domestic violence.

Guest Opinion. The largest, most comprehensive budget in the history of the Cherokee Nation will improve lives both for Cherokees and non-Cherokees across our 7,000-square-mile reservation in northeast Oklahoma. In the coming fiscal year, we will distribute more than $3.5 billion into more and better services for Cherokee citizens.

Opinion. During election years, Labor Day has served historically as the kickoff to the November election season. While there’s already been unusually high interest in primary elections in this cycle, campaigning will intensify over the coming weeks as the midterm elections approach on November 8, 2022.

Guest Opinion. Cherokee history is full of rich moments and great triumphs. Throughout history, the Cherokee people have acted collectively to overcome tragedy, work through trauma, and build a great nation. Telling that story is important. But a great nation is strong enough to tell the whole story, including those times when we inflicted trauma on others.

Opinion. During the 2020 Democratic presidential primary season there were at one point more than two dozen candidates vying for the nomination. Candidates worked hard to differentiate themselves from others to become the front runner. Progressive candidates, such as Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, promised to eliminate undergraduate student loan debt. As a candidate, then-former Vice President Joe Biden jumped on the bandwagon and promised to forgive student debt.

Guest Opinion. As Cherokees, valuing family is core to our identity as a people. That value extends to our role as an employer, both for the Cherokee Nation government and Cherokee Nation Businesses. As our workforce has grown and evolved, we needed a better family leave policy to support workers in meeting both their work and home life obligations.

Land that was wrongly taken from tribes more than 100 years ago is often only returned if the tribes agree to adhere to someone else’s interpretation of what’s best for the land. There’s a better way to right an old wrong.
