Guest Opinion. For generations, education has been deeply important to the Cherokee people. The Cherokee government established the first public education system in this land in 1841, decades before the state of Oklahoma existed. Our ancestors built this foundation so that Cherokee youth have opportunities to succeed in the modern world, while carrying on Cherokee culture and knowing where they come from.

Opinion. Native American cartoonist Ricardo Caté (Santo Domingo Pueblo), creator of the Santa Fe New Mexican’s daily “Without Reservations” comic, posted online a cartoon with the caption: “Slap heard ‘round the world” after actor Will Smith smacked comedian Chris Rock during the Academy Awards television last Sunday night.

Cherokee Nation is strongest when our people have healthy bodies and minds. Too many Cherokees suffer with health conditions that could be exponentially improved with easier access to exercise, healthy food and support for their mental well-being. Within our tribal health system at Cherokee Nation, we know it is much healthier and less expensive to address these issues before they become a medical emergency.

Guest Opinion Growing up in Montana on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation, I learned firsthand the importance of voting through my parents, who never missed an Election Day and even ran voter registration drives for our community. My parents always said that there were two non-negotiables in our family: “You go to school and you vote.”

Because our editorial staff is spread over several states, the Native News Online newsroom is actually a virtual newsroom. We meet virtually in editorial huddles to discuss potential articles for publication. We go through news releases we have received and to hear about events happening at tribes in Indian Country, and review and discuss new policies and programs for Native Americans out of Washington, D.C.

Guest Opinion. One of our most critical values as Cherokee people is that our elders are essential keepers of our history and culture, and they deserve to live in safety and dignity. In 2019 Deputy Chief Bryan Warner and I proposed, and the Council of the Cherokee Nation approved, the Housing, Jobs and Sustainable Communities Act.

Guest Opinion. An issue that I passionately believe in is that every Cherokee woman should feel safe in her community and in her home. That’s why I was so proud this week to attend the formal announcement of the reauthorized and expanded Violence Against Women Act.

Guest Opinion.  Entering the period known as lent in the Christian tradition is to enter a period of reflection, to repent for our sins, and to prepare our bodies and souls for the sublime sacrifice of Christ on the cross. This 40-day period begins with Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Thursday, when the high days of Holy Week take over.

Opinion.  The war in Ukraine reminds us of how horrible war is and, for that matter, has been throughout the history of humankind. This modern war has exemplified how far one murderous dictator—Vladimir Putin—will go to satisfy his greed for land and thirst for power.
